Since its inception in 2009, Findatruckload has been reducing the number of trucks on the road by matching empty loads with businesses that need transport. The result? A highly sustainable business model that is efficient and cost-effective for both buyers and sellers.
We caught up with Findatruckload Director Andrew Bishop, to learn where the idea behind the operation is taking him and his business partner Walter Ormsby.
The Findatruckload success story began in New Plymouth as the brainchild of Andrew Bishop and Walter Ormsby. In 2009, the two former Mainfreight employees set out to establish an online market place to bring together New Zealand road transport companies and freight providers after observing trucks repeatedly returning from jobs or going to jobs, empty. Now Findatruckload provides transport solutions for over 200 companies nationwide.
Andrew, who graduated from Lincoln University with a degree in Transport and Logistics, explains the benefits for both transport operators and load providers as being twofold. “Transport operators have the opportunity to make use of their trucks running empty by ‘backfilling’ with loads that need transporting, whilst businesses with freighting requirements benefit from the choice of multiple carriers, pricing and service offerings.” The Findatruckload model also enables carriers to work collaboratively, by providing an independent, competitive market place to trade loads in a private tender format. This is something that Andrew says has been a sensitive subject in the past due to the risk of client poaching, but now because Findatruckload works as an independent market place, this is no longer an issue. Underpinning the entire service is sustainability, which Andrew asserts is the reason Findatruckload came into existence. Financially, the scheme benefits all parties; manufacturers, suppliers, wholesalers, exporters and other transport companies. Environmentally, Findatruckload is just as robust. “Minimising the amount of trucks running empty not only creates efficiencies for transport operators (and transport users), it also reduces their carbon emissions”. Unsurprisingly, this green ethos is paying off for the team and it has helped them to win several awards. They were commended for the Chamber of Commerce Environmental & Sustainability Awareness Award and have been recognised by the EECA as a business that demonstrates energy efficiency and conservation.

Looking to the future, Findatruckload aims to develop existing markets as well as livestock and furniture cartage in New Zealand. And their future plans don’t stop here. Andrew has his eye on the international market and believes that Findatruckload can be a market leader by continuing to offer the transport industry accurate, timely and easy to use technology that reduces revenue loss through empty running.
